02Pricing tiers

Where your job lands.

Three bands cover the full spread we see. Most jobs land in the typical band: bigger or smaller jobs sit either side.

Smaller scope, easier access, fewer line items.

03What drives the price

Where the spread comes from.

Each entry below moves the median up or down. Your job lands somewhere on the curve based on how these stack.

01

New circuit or existing

Adding fittings to an existing circuit is much cheaper than running a new circuit back to the switchboard. New circuits also require switchboard space. We’ll flag if a board upgrade is needed.

02

Fitting type and supply

Recessed downlights are the cheapest to fit. Pendants, track lighting, architectural wash, and statement fittings vary widely. We can supply or you can supply.

03

Switching and control

A simple two-way switch is cheap. Multi-zone dimming, smart switching (Lutron, Clipsal Wiser), and scene control adds 30–60% to the labour and components.

04

Ceiling access

Open-wall renovation rough-ins are cheapest. Adding fittings to closed-up ceilings requires careful access planning, sometimes through manholes, sometimes from above.

Lighting is one of the few electrical jobs where design choices visibly compound. Get the layout, colour temperature and dimming right and a room transforms; get them wrong and you’ll think about it every evening. The price band above covers most residential lighting work across Melbourne’s east, from a single new circuit through to whole-of-house renovations.

Bundle the work where you can

The cheapest lighting installs happen during a renovation when ceilings are open and circuits can be planned from scratch. The next cheapest are bundled jobs: six rooms in one visit, not one room six times. Single-fitting retrofits in a closed-up house are inherently the most expensive per fitting because of access. Where it’s cheaper for you, we’ll suggest grouping work or coordinating with a renovation milestone.

What’s included in a Millar Electrics quote

A free on-site walkthrough, a written itemised quote within one business day, and a fixed price with no surprises after acceptance. Cable runs, switching, dimmers compatible with your fittings, neat make-good of any access cuts, fitting installation and commissioning, and the Certificate of Electrical Safety lodged with Energy Safe Victoria.

A free lighting installation quote covers the design conversation as well as the price: we’ll walk the rooms, talk through layout and control, and put it in writing.

05FAQ

Common questions about cost.

Either works. We can supply trade-quality fittings at trade pricing (you save on retail markup). If you've picked specific fittings from an interior designer, supply them yourself and we'll fit them.

Sometimes. If your board is full or doesn't have RCD protection, new circuits trigger the upgrade. We assess at quote stage. See our switchboard upgrade cost guide.

For new builds and renovations, yes. Wiring is the same effort. Retrofitting smart switches into a finished home costs more in labour for less benefit. Discuss at quote stage.
