03What drives the price

Where the spread comes from.

Each entry below moves the median up or down. Your job lands somewhere on the curve based on how these stack.

01

System size (kW)

6.6kW is the residential sweet spot for most Melbourne homes. Larger systems (10kW+) for high-consumption homes or three-phase. Per kW installed cost decreases with size.

02

Battery capacity (kWh)

A typical Tesla Powerwall (13.5kWh) is around $14K. Smaller batteries (5–10kWh) cost less but suit specific use cases — discuss your usage patterns.

03

Inverter type

String inverter is cheapest. Hybrid inverters (solar + battery in one) are mid. Microinverters (one per panel) are premium but handle shading better.

04

Roof type and complexity

Tiled roof, single-storey, north-facing is the cheapest install. Two-storey, complex roof line, multiple orientations, or skillion roofs add labour.

05

Rebates

STC rebate (federal) is automatic — typically $3K–$6K off depending on size. Victorian Solar Homes program offers additional rebates and zero-interest loans for eligible homeowners.

Solar and battery is a specialist trade — panel installation and grid-tie commissioning is best handled by a CEC-accredited solar partner, and that's how we structure the work. The price band above reflects the full installed cost, with the specialist solar component delivered by our partners and the surrounding electrical work — switchboard upgrades, sub-mains, EV integration, metering — handled by us. Rebates are deducted at point of sale where you qualify.

When the cost lands at the upper end

Three-phase supply, complex roof orientations, battery storage above 13.5 kWh, and EV-integrated load management all push a quote above the median. The single biggest variable is whether your existing switchboard and consumer mains supply can carry the new generation — for older boards we often recommend an upgrade in the same engagement so the system is future-proofed for a battery later.

What's included in a Millar Electrics quote
