If your home still has halogen downlights, fluorescent battens in the laundry or garage, or compact fluorescents in pendants, an LED retrofit is one of the fastest-payback electrical upgrades you can make. Modern LEDs use 80–90% less power than halogen, run cool (no more scorched plaster around the recess), and last well into a decade rather than 12 months. Better still: the right LED at the right colour temperature, on the right dimmer, gives you a warmer and more consistent light than the halogens it replaces.
Halogen-to-LED retrofits
Modern LED retrofit kits drop straight into the standard MR16 halogen recess in your ceiling. We swap the fitting, replace any 12 V transformer that the new LED no longer needs, test the existing dimmer for LED compatibility, and you have a finished room that evening. No plaster patching, no ceiling cuts, no painters. Most halogen-to-LED jobs across a typical home are done in a single visit.
Dimming, colour temperature, and beam angle
Three details make the difference between a "good" and "great" LED retrofit. Dimmer compatibility: older leading-edge dimmers cause LED flicker and shortened driver life — modern trailing-edge LED-compatible dimmers fix every common complaint. Colour temperature: 2700K matches halogen and suits living and bedroom; 4000K suits kitchen and bathroom task light. Don't mix within a room. Beam angle: narrow (24°) for accent and ceiling-height rooms, wider (60°+) for general living lighting. We pick all three per room rather than fitting one downlight type everywhere.
Strip lighting, pelmets, and feature work
Beyond downlight retrofits, we install LED strip lighting under kitchen joinery and pelmets, in bathroom mirror surrounds, behind TV walls, and along stair risers. This is where LED really earns its keep — light that simply wasn't practical with halogen for heat and cost reasons. We use LED strip from Australian-distributed brands with proper aluminium channel and an in-line driver in an accessible location, not the tape-it-up-and-hope-it-lasts approach.
Quality and warranty
We source LED fittings from established Australian distributors with five-year manufacturer warranty and stock-on-hand for warranty replacement. Cheap LED downlights from generic online sellers (no fixed brand, no Australian importer) frequently fail at 12–18 months with no realistic warranty path — and the failure is almost always the driver, not the chip. We don't fit them, even when asked.
Standards we work to
LED lighting work is installed to AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) for the fixed-wiring side and AS/NZS 60598 (luminaires) for the fittings themselves. Australian-distributed product carries a Regulatory Compliance Mark and meets the EMC and immunity requirements that make modern LEDs play nicely with dimmers, automation controllers, and adjacent electronics — which is the other reason we don't fit no-brand imports.
