Homespun Home Extension
Warm and practical electrical for a family-centred rear addition

How it came together.
The brief for this project was simple but exacting: add a new kitchen and family room to the rear of a modest brick home, and make the electrical feel like it's always been there. No visible conduit, no mismatched switch plates, and enough power points that no one would ever need an extension cord. We delivered all three.
Kitchen electrical
The new kitchen received a complete set of dedicated appliance circuits — oven, rangehood, dishwasher, refrigerator, and a 20A circuit for the microwave and small appliances. Under-cabinet LED strip lighting was installed on a low-voltage driver concealed in the overhead cabinetry. Island bench power was provided via two flush-mounted GPOs recessed into the bench face.
Family room
The family room was wired with six recessed downlights on a dimmable circuit, two wall-sconce wiring points flanking the fireplace surround, and a TV point with in-wall HDMI and data conduit run back to the communications hub. An adequate number of double GPOs were installed on all four walls so the room can be configured freely without trailing leads.
Connection to existing home
We extended the existing home's circuits into the new space where load capacity allowed, and added new circuits for the high-draw areas. The switchboard labelling was updated to reflect the new layout clearly. A hardwired smoke alarm was added in the new zone and interconnected to the existing smoke alarm network.
