Effortless Hamptons Living
Alfresco lighting and ceiling fans for a coastal-inspired outdoor extension
How it came together.
The Hamptons aesthetic is about easy, generous living — and that extends to the outdoor spaces where a lot of the living actually happens. This Croydon project centred on a new alfresco entertaining area and the electrical infrastructure needed to make it genuinely functional all year round.
Alfresco lighting
We installed a combination of overhead weatherproof LED fittings for task lighting and a series of low-voltage garden spotlights around the perimeter of the paved entertaining area. The two circuits were separated so the garden lighting could be left on as ambient while the overhead lights were turned off. All fittings were rated IP44 or above for outdoor use.
Ceiling fans
Three ceiling fans were installed under the alfresco roof — an important comfort consideration in Melbourne's summer. Each fan was wired on its own circuit with an in-wall speed controller, and the wiring was concealed in the structural roofing. The fans selected were rated for outdoor use and carry a corrosion-resistant finish.
Outdoor power
Three weatherproof GPOs were installed at bench height around the perimeter of the entertaining area for appliances, lighting, and general use. A dedicated circuit was run for the outdoor kitchen's appliance connection points. All external circuits are RCD-protected at the switchboard.
